2021 VALUING WATER #WATER2ME

About:
The United Nations World Water Day is observed annually on 22 March, where they request the world to focus on this vital resource and host activations around the globe.

This years’ focus is ‘VALUING WATER’ and asks the question ‘What Does Water Mean To You?’. The goal of this day is to discover what water means to different people, how they value it and how we, as Water Ambassadors & Educators, can better protect this vital resource. By observing and celebrating all the different ways water benefits our lives, we can value water properly and safeguard it effectively for everyone.

SOS NPO will be hosting two activations in the Bloekombos Community, in celebration of Water over this United Nations observance.

ACTIVATION 1: BLOEKOMBOS PARK – BLEKIE ST

DATE: TUESDAY 23 MARCH  TIME: 10:00 – 13:30 VENUE: BLOEKOMBOS KIDS PARK – Blekie Street, Bloekombos, Kraaifontein

As part of the Covid response and prevention project, SOS NPO have been installing emergency hand-washing stations into the Bloekombos and Wallacedene communities to provide sanitation resources in hot-spot, high foot-count areas such as Taxi-Ranks, Schools and Community Clinics.

As an extension of this project SOS are involved with a new PARKS Upgrade Project with the City of Cape Town, which involves the identification, clearing, cleaning and recovering of original park spaces, that were assigned as play areas for the children and social areas for residents in Bloekombos.

Research has proven that parks and playgrounds significantly improve the physical and mental health of a community's citizens of all ages, making them a cornerstone for improved quality of life..

Unfortunately, most of these social spaces have either been land-reclaimed or are in a state of decay being used as rubbish dumps.  There is a need to communicate the importance of these social spaces to the community and engage them in a way that increases their positive thinking around these areas. This will in turn assist in changing behaviour and create a sense of ownership and protection by the residents themselves.

This activation will take place at the first park SOS and the City have upgraded, along with an installation of 4 hand-washing stations supplied by 2 x 5000L water tanks.

This will be a celebration of valuing water AND parks!

ACTIVATION 2: MASIBAMBANE SECONDARY SCHOOL - BLOEKOMBOS

DATE: TUESDAY 23 MARCH  TIME: 14:00 – 16:00 VENUE: MASIBAMBANE SCHOOL – Old Paarl Rd, Bloekombos, Kraaifontein

This activation will take place at Masibambane Secondary School in Bloekombos, where SOS NPO installed the very first Hand-Washing Station. There will be Water Challenges and Obstacle Courses with the pupils of Masibambane, as well as Presentations by the SDG Youth Club Ministers, where we learn more about What Water Means To Them and their Sustainable Development Goals that they lead.

We will also be hosting a celebration and ribbon cutting award ceremony with Volvo Trucks SA, a valued partner of SOS NPO. They will be presenting SOS NPO with 2 x Volvo heavy duty trucks! This award was won by Volvo Trucks SA, on behalf of SOS NPO, for the work done in the Community with the Covid Response Hand-Washing Stations project.
